Hello brave bakers!
As a professional chef I have learned a lottips and tricksThrough the years. Now I share someBold Baking BasicsThis will help you have fun and improve your skills on your baking journey. I often get asked, "Is there a substitute for sweetened condensed milk?" in my recipes that include it as mineHomemade ice cream made with 2 ingredientsoeasy tres leches cakeme. In fact, you can make sweetened condensed milk at home with just a few simple ingredients.
What is condensed milk?
Condensed milk is traditionally cow's milk with much of the water content boiled and then sugar added. I often use sweetened condensed milk for baking. If you can't find it in your country, you can easily make it at home. It is one of the main ingredients in mine.2-ingredient ice cream without machine. If you like your parfaits a bit lighter and fruitier then try mine.Homemade Sorbet in 5 Minutes (Without Machine)
Can I make non-dairy condensed milk?
My condensed milk recipe does contain milk, but if you are dairy-free and/or want to bake vegan, I also have the exact same recipe but with coconut milk instead of cow's milk. It's just as easy to prepare and tastes great too. find mineDairy Free Condensed Milk Recipe. You can also use nut milks and other sugars like agave, honey, maple syrup, see notes section in recipe for details.
How to make sweetened condensed milk
Simmering the milk and sugar over low, controlled heat produces a thick, syrupy milk. After cooling, it thickens and is ready to use. It will keep in the fridge for weeks if you don't need it right away.
What is the difference between condensed milk and condensed milk?
The biggest difference between compressed andcondensed milkis the sugar content. Both are made by reducing a percentage of the water content of the milk, but the condensed version has added sugar that is caramelized to thicken the milk, hence why it is called sweetened condensed milk.
Use your homemade sweetened condensed milk to make:
- Homemade ice cream made with 2 ingredients
- homemade sorbet
- 3 Ingredient Coconut Macaroons

Ingredients
- 2 bags (16 fl oz/450 ml) whole milk or semi-skimmed milk*
- ⅔ bags (5oz /142g) white sugar
instructions
Place the milk and sugar in a small heavy-bottomed saucepan.
Heat over low heat until the sugar has dissolved.
Once all the sugar has dissolved, bring the mixture to a simmer over medium-high heat. Do not stir once the mixture begins to simmer, otherwise it may crack and crystallize.
Simmer for about 35-40 minutes or until the milk has become creamy, reduced by half, and thickened slightly. You may notice foam forming on top, carefully skim it off with a spoon. (If there are bits of sugar hanging over the edge of your saucepan, don't stir them into your condensed milk, this can break up your mixture as well)
When ready, remove from heat and pour into a jar to cool. Allow the condensed milk to cool completely before replacing the airtight lid. Just keep in mind that it will thicken up a lot after a few hours in the fridge.
Store in a labeled jar in the fridge and it will keep for 6 months.
recipe notes
The finished condensed milk measures 1 cup/8 oz.
You can use any nut milk instead of regular milk.
Instead of white sugar, you can use coconut sugar, maple syrup, light honey, or other natural sugars.
The substitute used must be able to caramelize. Stevia, Xylitol, Splenda do not caramelize and therefore will not work in this recipe.

No, a scant can! what to make at midnight Go to their website and find a recipe to make my own! It took a while to cook and cool, but I was able to finish my cake without going to a night shop at midnight! You are the BEST chef out there! Egg yolk,
I want to thank you for sharing all these tips and recipes! I also want to thank you for not bloating your site with ads. Too many recipe pages aren't all ads and it's irritating when they flicker, flicker, and take half the time. Thanks for NOT doing this. I don't want to see anything but ads and you keep yours pretty clean!

Hello! My condensed milk doesn't seem to be working. I've tried it twice, but both times, just before it reaches a thick consistency, it starts to form crystals and clumps. What am I doing wrong?
I used fresh low-fat milk and regular white sugar, all measured as directed in the recipe. I also use a gas stove. Is the stove maybe my problem?
And how can I make dulce de leche with that?

Thanks for this method! My son is lactose intolerant and I couldn't get lactose free sweetened condensed milk so making some is great.

Let this simmer for about an hour more and you have dulce de leche. Simmer for another hour, stirring constantly (it will thicken) and pour into a bowl lined with something (I just used foil) and you have an amazing dulce de leche candy bar that you will cut through and drool over.
I never thought of using simple maple syrup. I literally spent just 3 hours making candy only to immediately regret not finding these first. I have a jar of freshly harvested maple syrup in front of me as I write this. Dammit.

May I ask...if I use condensed milk...is it necessary to reduce it? Or just dissolve the sugar… I want to make your 3-ingredient coconut cookies 😊

Thanks for this recipe! I don't stir the milk after boiling it, but it still crystallizes when I use the evaporated milk to make caramel. Can you help me or give me some advice on how to fix this problem?
